Great value on a pro printer

I've been printing my wife's art (greeting cards and fine art prints) for the past few years on the 1100 and then 7010 with decent results but with a lot of tweaking to get the color close. In some cases the gamut was too limited to get it right. After the 7010 went south I decided to step up to the R3000. They had great rebates on it and glowing reviews. The R3000 is everything they said it was. After I re-profiled my monitor and did my first test print the color was nearly perfect. I also realized all the color and subtle detail I had been missing! I now print art and photos for other artists and the results have been fabulous. Ink usage for prints has been reasonable but there is quite a bit used when switching blacks between photo and matte. Fortunately Epson and other retailers often have decent sales on ink (and paper). I tried to use 3rd party inks on the old printers but got widely varying results on color and they eventually ended up clogged beyond repair. I stick with Epson genuine now. I also decided to get an extended warranty because repairs can often exceed the entire price of the printer. Not such a big deal on low end printers but definitely worthwhile at this price point.

This was a spectacular printer when it was working. But the black ink nozzles clogged frequently and eventually deposited black blobs of ink on the edges of the paper. Because I liked the quality of the prints, I took the printer to an authorized repair shop, where they replaced the print head, at considerable expense. They (and I) thought that would take care of the problem. I got a number of additional prints out of it and then, in switching from photo black ink to matte black ink, the heads totally clogged up. After trying all of Epson's suggested home remedies, I took it back to the shop. They said it looked like the head needed to be replaced again. Rather than putting that much more money into the printer, I junked it. My understanding is that because the photo black and matte black inks share the same tube and nozzle, this is a frequent problem. Perhaps if I were a photographer who printed every day, it wouldn't have happened but I'm not. I wish Epson would fix this problem because I would love to be able to use their photo printers.

I'm a professional photographer and needed a higher quality printer than my Epson Artisan 50, which is the best for photos of all the consumer-grade home printers. After extensive research, I selected the R3000 and haven't regretted it for a minute. Also, I have a small apartment and the R3000 looks good, not obtrusive at all and surprisingly compact. Lastly, changing inks is a much more efficient process than any previous printer I've owned. The only down side is the cost of the ink, but that's true of all professional printers, any brand.

I bought this as a temporary replacement for my Epson 7890 that was destroyed in Hurricane Sandy. It uses the same inks as the 7890, so my workflow hasn't changed. The quality is excellent and the R3000 can also print on pretty much the same papers and aluminum foil I use in my art. I have two issues with this printer; the roll feed mechanism and the manual art paper feed. The roll paper mechanism can only take a 13" roll. There is no spindle, only two flimsy plastic ends so a roll less than 13" wide won't fit. My aluminum foil comes in 12" rolls so I had to fabricate a workaround by cutting a PVC pipe and forcing it into the two plastic roll feed ends so it feeds the 12" aluminum foil evenly. Epson needs to redesign the flimsy roll feed ends as they break much too easily. I am now on my 3rd pair. The manual art paper feed works ok but it's tied by software to the paper type; so if you want to use a matte art paper, you are forced to use the manual art paper feed even if it would fit in the normal paper path; otherwise, that particular paper choice is not available in your print dialogue box. This is a small gripe, but I wish Epson had given you the choice. Replacing the ink cartridges is easy and the cost is low. I have had absolutely NO clogging issues, even after not printing for a month or two. All in all, this is a nice printer that serves my needs until I can re-purchase the 24" wide 7890.

I am a professional photographer and I upgraded to the 3000 to get the better print head (from an R1900) The quality has been outstanding for my photo work. I also use my 3000 for my business communications and it performs flawlwessly.
