I bought a KDL55NX720 during the Black Friday sale and got this Blu-ray system for free. Now that I have used it for a few months I have come to realize why it was free! I have both of them hooked up and working great , but for some stupid reason while I am watching TV the surround sound will CUT out and I'll have to reboot EVERYTHING! My DirecTV, Blu-ray, and TV have NO sound! It is the MOST annoying thing! Other than that I have had no issues and the 3D looks pretty good, the iPhone/iPod dock works well, and the internet content works well over my network. All-in-All I give it 3 out of 5 but I do NOT recommend it for anyone!
Great unit with a few bugs.

I love the system, it sounds great. Speaker wires for the front speakers could be slightly longer. I like how the menu is set up. The design of the player could be alittle better. The speakers are the perfect size for the room I'm using the unit in. I really like the size of the center channel speaker. It's small and has great sound,it doesn't seem large and bulky like some of the other brands. The few issues I have with the unit are: The remote doesn't always take you to the home menu when the button is pressed. I have to play around with the unit for a few minutes. The other issue is, when I turn the unit on the speakers do not turn on. I have to get into the menu and press the setting I want to get them to work. I have had to turn the unit off twice to reboot it. I have had this now for almost 2 months. Sony needs to address these issues if they can with a patch to adjust the settings so it will work properly all the time. If it wasn't for these few issues I would have given 5 stars. I haven't spoken with customer support so I can't say how well they are with customers. If you don't mind a few bugs I would recommend this Home Theater System.
Great unit when the sound works

I have had several home theater systems and this is the first time I have had probelms. The system worked great right up until I upgraded it, now it takes 3-5 mnutes to hear the sound after I power it up. If this were not a gift I would have returned it long ago. I do not recommend this unit until they fix the alleged upgrade.
good system for a small room

Overall this is a good system for the right size room. We are using it in our daughter's bedroom and the sound and look is very pleasing. The one issue we had at the start was the HDMI inputs didn't cocnsistently detect the Directv HD box model H20-100. I tried different HDMI cables and two different H20-100 units but it almost never would work. I almost returned the BDV-E580 because of this. I did have another option which was to connect the H20-100 directly to the HD LCD TV (KDL40W4100) and use the digital audio optical output from the TV to the BDV-E580 input. Ultimately I ended up with a better solution by chance. I had Directv swap out the H20-100 HD receivers for the newer H25-500 models. These worked with no probelms so far. The only other issue is a minor one and it is the length of time it takes to get a picture and sound when switching to another device input.

This is a great Blu Ray player, decent stereo receiver, and an excellent way to combine all the functions of a home theater and content streaming service in one, compact package. It's a decent device for the price. Sony still has yet to realize the dream of connecting the entire suite of its products however. I cannot stream much of anything from my Sony Tablet S to the BVD-E580 via DLNA, which is why we bought it. The ad of the Sony executive throwing video content to the TV is a HOAX. It cannot be done, because DRM protected content CANNOT BE THROWN. Furthermore, the tablet cannot recognize the BVD-580 as a DLNA server and vice-versa, even though other Android tablets (ASUS Transformer) work with the player just fine.
