A good little GPS for the price!
By DonVerified Reviewer from Michigan on 1/17/2009
Pros:
Compact, Easy Menus, Easy To Read, Easy To Set Up
Best Uses:
Faster Routes, Finding Specific Address, Planning Trips, Rural Navigation, Urban Navigation
Describe Yourself:
Casual User
How are you with directions:
Bad w/Directions
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I find this unit to be great for the price, the lifetime traffic is a blessing (I have been routed around slow zones twice with no problems!) the speaker is a little hard to hear, but I tucked a thin card like a pocket calendar between the mount and the unit and it improved the sound quite a bit. I like the night mode, and the POI's are good if you take a minute to load where you are it will find just about any place to eat or get gas, which is all I do on a trip anyway, maybe ATM but that is programable, too. I bought a stylus to use on the screen (big fingers) that works quite well! Overall a good companion on trips!!

I have had two other GPS. This one is simple and easy to use. The screen is hard to read and the voice is hard to hear. My other is a TomTom One and is very eay to read and no problems hearing the voice comands. Pay alittle more and get the 7100. I wish I had.

If you are anything like me and make getting lost a daily ritual then you are going to love this thing! I bought it a month ago after many hours of research. To say that I am happy with my findings would be the understatement of the year! I’ve not made one wrong turn or ended up two hours out of my way because I didn’t see the exit! This little Navigator has become my best friend and I have no idea how I or anyone for that matter could live without it. If you are in the market for one then I strongly suggest you get this one. You won’t be sorry.

Looks Much Nicer Than It Does

I purchased the Navigon 5100 getting impressed by the looks. But when I put it to use, it didn’t worth the money I spent. You can’t hear the speaker, even at maximum volume. The interface is highly convoluted. The maps are hard to read, and you can't modify the color-scheme. The interface is really time-consuming. Maps are also slow to bring up to date while driving. The POI system is very haphazard. It knows about unimportant car dealerships, but not the reliable auto part stores. I was expecting much more for the money I paid.

I recently purchased the Navigon 5100 GPS device after some research. First of all the Navigon is loaded with functions, this might overwhelm some, but of course remember that changing these are optional. I really love the windshield mount. But this gps runs off windows mobile 6.0CE and it takes forever to start. I live in a big city and the auto free traffic updates are a blessing. If I could just take the things that I like from all 3 gps systmes and add them to this one it would be perfect. Instead of turning off your Navigon, you simply give the power button one quick tap. This shuts down the display and puts it in STANDBY mode (i think it gives the unit enough power so it does not have to boot up like it does when you first turn it ON). Programming for long trips has been improved but, Navigon still needs to do some tweaking in that area. However, it programs as easily as most of the other GPS devices out there. You must HOLD the button for 10 seconds for startup and shut-down. The fonts are very small.
