Aside from my iMac, the ScanSnap iX500 is the most useful technology I have. Being retired, this scanner was purchased to organize the information contained within the mountain of writings, receipts, tax information, invoices, photographs, and bills occupying many file cabinets and drawers and to then eliminate most of that paper. Rather than use the excellent software provided, i.e. Evernote et al, I am using the file and folders system native to the iMac and that is working well for our purposes. Since this iMac has Windows XP Pro running under Parallels, I installed both the Apple and Windows software. Since that installation, I have removed the Windows installation as unneeded. Hardware and software installation was by the numbers and glitch free. I started slow with a couple of file folders and incoming mail to get the feel of the ScanSnap and rapidly discovered just how easy and fast this process is. Naming the scanned files to easily find them by date and subject is the most time consuming part of the process and that is now partly automated with copy and paste of like item descriptions. Once started, the process of scanning, electronically filing, and most importantly filling the shredder becomes a bit of fun because one can actually see and measure progress as space is cleared while information is still readily available. On those occasions when I have had to find some bit of trivia or tax related information, I have it on the screen much faster than I would have when shuffling through the file drawers. Being able to scan to a particular folder or the Desktop is the first feature we used. Recently, I have been scanning to email and used that feature recently with our brokerage firm to send and receive forms requiring signature while on the phone. They place a form on our portion of their website, we print it, sign it, scan it back to email and send it back to them and done. That fast. No snail mail, no waiting, any errors fixed on the fly while talking to the representative on the other end of the line. That is technology that works for us. I recently recovered a large number of old photographs from my Mother’s estate which I have now scanned into iPhoto on the iMac. Those old black and white photos dating back to the early 1900’s were then shared with family across the country. Again, technology that works. None of the photos were damaged in the least by the process. Because of limited vision, scanning documents into the computer has also allowed my wife to read documents using Apple's magnified screen feature. Now the mail that I previously had to read to her, is scanned in to her iMac where she magnifies it and reads it easily or I can scan to text and she can use the computer to read it to her. The only difficulty encountered was with some old, fragile paperwork that crumpled a bit going through the scanner. Smoothed and fed individually, most went through on a second pass. The transparent document carrier was used for the others. I continue to find new uses for the scanner. Highly recommended.

I was terrifically excited when I bought my ScanSnap about 2 months ago. Maybe it's my inability to understand, but I'm still buried under a mountain of papers. I bought Paperless because of reviews I read and I find the whole process slow and laborious. I was also excited about the upgrade I made to wi-fi, but after two sessions, wi-fi quit and hasn't worked since. I would love to sit in a hands-on class for a week with someone. I find the knowledgebase to be cumbersome, also, and usually I can't find the solution that I'm looking for. The whole idea of scanning is very attractive. I just wish it were more user friendly.

New software works!

Comments about Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500:

I use this scanner just for receipts. The new software has a "Receipts" option and now scanning store receipts is logical and quick. Thanks.

Outstanding prooduct

Comments about Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500:

The Scansnap has performed extremely well and allows one to scan multipage documents easily. My only criticism is that the machine turns off after a time and you have to go to the Manager to restart it--otherwise a fabulous addendum to your PC

Excellent Product

Comments about Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500:

Hardware - works as advertised. Can stack a bunch of papers, different sizes, scans them very fast. No issues with connectivity. Very rarely jams, easy to clear when it does. Will not scan really long receipts. Handles scanning over 50 pages, but you have to feed it and clear it throughout the process - so fast it is hard to keep up sometimes. I scanned thousands of documents since I bought it a year ago or so, very reliable. Only downside is I cannot scan books and thick material (like softcover books) since it is not a flatbed. Also, its hard to scan some special materials like cardboard CD cases, some credit card and id sized objects, and super thin (tissue-like) paper, but those cases are rare for me. Software - also excellent. It allows for human mistakes, very configurable, guesses page orientation well, dual-sided scan is smart, included Adobe Acrobat is great allowing for post-scanning modifications and other features like encryption, page deletion, and document merging which my previous scanner did not allow. Only issue with that is I cannot figure out how to scan from Acrobat, but I am fine just pressing the button on the scanner instead. iPhone app works well, but I barely use it because I usually don't need docs on my phone. I like that the software is designed for people like me that scan stuff all the time. I paid extra for Rack2Smart. Software works fine, but in the end I just scan to a folder and file my files in real folders. I think I would use Rack2Smart if it had duplication capabilities and kept the files in a real filesystem so I could find them with and without running Rack2Smart (similar to the options in iTunes to storing music, I like to manage the folders). I tried other scan options, all of which work fine, but the two I use the most are scan to folder and scanning business cards. For improvements, I wish it had an Ethernet interface rather than USB - not critical but would be nice. Also, it pops up a dialog when a file is saved, that extra click that wastes time especially when scanning lots of documents and walking back and forth between my computer and the scanner. It should only alert me if a file did not save. But in general, there are way fewer clicks and less typing than my previous scanner so I am happy about that (just need to get rid of this last click). It would also be nice if after a document is scanned that I can press the scan button to save it and scan the next document without having to go back and forth between my computer and the scanner. Final improvement idea would be to have a selection slider switch to choose between the default computer settings, scan to folder, scan to e-mail, and scan to business card application on the scanner so I don't have to change software settings when flipping between tasks (again to avoid back and forth between scanner and computer). Overall, this is the best scanner I ever worked with, even compared to the expensive commercial copier/scanner I use at work. Also, for what it is worth, I told a coworker (both of us are technical computer geeks) that I had this scanner and he mentioned previously bought it too and also likes it and affirmed I made a wise choice.

This scanner does everything it promised.

Comments about Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500:

This scanner does everything that it promised in the promotional literature. I purchased it to scan documents and receipts. It is fast. Press the blue scan button and "boom". You can also set up the scanning options to accommodate scanning to different file types, scanning directly to Evernote or Dropbox, Google Docs, etc. And I've set up custom scan functions, e.g. scanning documents to high quality PDF or JPG and save in a custom location. The image quality is decent and I have a flat bed scanner that I also use when I want to scan oversize documents, or documents at a higher resolution. ScanSnap will scan a "handful" of different documents in various sizes. If the documents are clean and in good shape -- no problem. But use common sense. I've ripped pages out of wire-coil notebooks and scanned them, and it handled it pretty well -- and you can jam it if you try. Another feature that I really like is that I can scan directly to my iPhone or iPad without even turning on my computer - then upload the file directly to email or dropbox -- makes those business expense reports a lot easier to manage. Bottom line, this is the scanner you reach for when you need quick, good quality scans of items 8.5 x11 and smaller. I enthusiastically recommend this product.

Excellent Product

Comments about Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500:

I've had my scansnap for over 9 months now and am fully satisfied with it. No cropping needed as it perfectly scans to the size of the document which is fed to it. Had a problem once with a vertical line which appeared on each scanned document, sent a mail to the support team who helped me solved the problem within 24 hours (just dust). Wish every company would be as reactive! The sheet to scan double page documents works very well too. I highly recommend the Scansnap iX500.

My ScanSnap freed up a lot of life for me to live doing something other than sitting and waiting on a slow scanner. It's a winner.

Hardware is flawless, software, not so mcu

Comments about Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500:

The hardware does its job, but then most scanners do. The software works in a brute force manner, but the subtleties are not easily understood.

Significantly Reduces filing and paper management

By Photonob

Comments about Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500:

This is a functionally excellent scanner. Feeds extremely well with all sizes of paper enabling scanning without feeding each piece separately. There are also lots of helpful videos and useful ideas on the website. My personal use pairs Evernote and that has significantly reduced my workload in filing and finding information.

The best valued office machine purchase I ever made.

By MountainMover

Comments about Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500:

Scan snap was easy to set up, easy to use, and super efficient. Recent software upgrades have made an already great product even better. I am finally making major inroads in paper and file organization and clutter removal. Most efficient office product I ever purchased and I have recommended it to several friends and business associates.
