Aside from my iMac, the ScanSnap iX500 is the most useful technology I have. Being retired, this scanner was purchased to organize the information contained within the mountain of writings, receipts, tax information, invoices, photographs, and bills occupying many file cabinets and drawers and to then eliminate most of that paper. Rather than use the excellent software provided, i.e. Evernote et al, I am using the file and folders system native to the iMac and that is working well for our purposes. Since this iMac has Windows XP Pro running under Parallels, I installed both the Apple and Windows software. Since that installation, I have removed the Windows installation as unneeded. Hardware and software installation was by the numbers and glitch free. I started slow with a couple of file folders and incoming mail to get the feel of the ScanSnap and rapidly discovered just how easy and fast this process is. Naming the scanned files to easily find them by date and subject is the most time consuming part of the process and that is now partly automated with copy and paste of like item descriptions. Once started, the process of scanning, electronically filing, and most importantly filling the shredder becomes a bit of fun because one can actually see and measure progress as space is cleared while information is still readily available. On those occasions when I have had to find some bit of trivia or tax related information, I have it on the screen much faster than I would have when shuffling through the file drawers. Being able to scan to a particular folder or the Desktop is the first feature we used. Recently, I have been scanning to email and used that feature recently with our brokerage firm to send and receive forms requiring signature while on the phone. They place a form on our portion of their website, we print it, sign it, scan it back to email and send it back to them and done. That fast. No snail mail, no waiting, any errors fixed on the fly while talking to the representative on the other end of the line. That is technology that works for us. I recently recovered a large number of old photographs from my Mother’s estate which I have now scanned into iPhoto on the iMac. Those old black and white photos dating back to the early 1900’s were then shared with family across the country. Again, technology that works. None of the photos were damaged in the least by the process. Because of limited vision, scanning documents into the computer has also allowed my wife to read documents using Apple's magnified screen feature. Now the mail that I previously had to read to her, is scanned in to her iMac where she magnifies it and reads it easily or I can scan to text and she can use the computer to read it to her. The only difficulty encountered was with some old, fragile paperwork that crumpled a bit going through the scanner. Smoothed and fed individually, most went through on a second pass. The transparent document carrier was used for the others. I continue to find new uses for the scanner. Highly recommended.

I was terrifically excited when I bought my ScanSnap about 2 months ago. Maybe it's my inability to understand, but I'm still buried under a mountain of papers. I bought Paperless because of reviews I read and I find the whole process slow and laborious. I was also excited about the upgrade I made to wi-fi, but after two sessions, wi-fi quit and hasn't worked since. I would love to sit in a hands-on class for a week with someone. I find the knowledgebase to be cumbersome, also, and usually I can't find the solution that I'm looking for. The whole idea of scanning is very attractive. I just wish it were more user friendly.

My right-hand assistant....

Comments about Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500:

ScanSnap is so user-friendly. It's compact when closed, can be loaded up with a couple dozen papers - receipts, or business cards, or full page sheets, as well as photographs. Keeping a load similar in size is logical and makes working it easier. So much better than individually scanning on a flatbed, though there are a few rare instances when a flatbed would be useful.

If you want to go paperless, this is the scanner. Much better than Neat scanner.

Expectations exceeded!

By wizard907

Comments about Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500:

This product was purchased only after careful research. It has exceeded my expectations, but somethings might be improved. For example, cash receipts are a hassle when only two inches wide. If the scanner is positioned on a platform or shelf and the document receivor is not folded out, then a file tray placed in front of the scanner can catch the scanned pages easily. Great product!

This scanner is amazing

Comments about Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500:

I had other scanners over a long period of time. So much work involved to get a final scan before either keeping it in the computer or sending important information to a client. I put it in and push a botton and make very few choices where I want it to go and wham! It's there and I don't have to even look in the file. I already know it is where I wanted it to go. I am only sorry I didn't discover Scan Snap long ago. It would have made my work easier and I wouldn't have had to spend so much time scanning. My Scan Snap is so easy to use and very quick and it gives me choices where all I have to do is point and click. Keep up the good work in making products that are in tune with the times. The ix500 Snap Scan is a blessing. Thank You Fujitsu, thank you.

Excellent Scanner ... Software Needs Improvement

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

Comments about Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500:

The scanner hardware is awesome. It works easily and scans both sides quickly. Can't really ask for much more in this price range. The software is not as good. It does the job, but the performance is not very good. Scanning for documents is a bit clunky and slow. Installation was confusing; there were times when I just hit next not knowing what was going on (e.g. setup of the main scan folder).

Great help in the office.

By Leroy

Comments about Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500:

A big aid to office productivity. The speed and ease of use of the copier facilitates the electronic rather than paper storage of lots of documents. Also helpful is that copies on both sides when needed are automatically done, and it integrates well with out Mac system. The one problem I experienced was the ability to connect it wirelessly. Even with help from customer support, we were not able to get it going, but it was not that important to us.

An excellent desktop scanner

By Bill W

from Westchester County NY

Comments about Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500:

I used the Snapscan 500 at work for two years. When the ADF of my home all-in-one device failed I purchased the SnapScan iX500 without hesitation. Simply stated, the device is great. The ADF works flawlessly with documents from cash register receipts to legal sized documents. In fact, it will scan documents longer than 14" if needed. At standard scan settings the scanner performs quickly. The scanner's resolution can be changed from what you use for general scanning to create a high quality image. Higher quality images take a bit more time, but the SnapScan is still faster than any other desktop scanner I've used in the past. The scanner automatically duplexes and automatically scans both color and black and white documents. The scanner has a rather small footprint and was easy to locate in a convenient place on my crowded, sloppy desk. I love how opening the scanner feeder and output trays turns on the device and how closing them turns it off. There is also a software setting that will turn off the device after a specified period of time. The wireless setup required both a firmware update and a software update. Both were well documented and performed exactly as described. Wireless setup was a snap as was moving the device to a new PC. I don't take full advantage of the SnapScan Manager software - I scan all documents I receive to a series of folders on my PC which is safeguarded by an off-site automatic backup. Accordingly, I keep very few paper records but am fully confident that I will always have rapid access to my records. I've had other scanners in the past - both stand-alone and multi-function devices - but nothing ever worked as well as my SnapScan.

excellent product

Comments about Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500:

works AS EXPECTED, DOES NOT COST MUCH - WHAT ELSE COULD YOU WANT There are a couple of things that would be nice, but not necessary and would probably increase the price
