Unless you're one of the very few people in the world who can write a driver and software, it's not really possible to separate the scanner from the human interface it provides. The V33's interface with the user is miserable. The software allows (4) modes; auto, home, office and pro. I've only used the "pro" setting. When selecting any resolution >600, a dialogue box pops up advising that the scan may make a large file or take a long time. Every. Single. Time. There is no option to "do not display" that dialogue again. And the default selection is "cancel," so you can't even hit a return or a space bar. It's just in the way, and it's going to stay there. Apparently forever. This is not my first scanner. This is not my tenth scanner. And I tend to do 'serious' work on either my large format scanner or my film scanner. But I did have a specific use for this scanner; I wanted something with a small footprint to fit a specific return (drawer with no sides) on my desk. I wanted a "handy" scanner. This scanner has the LEDs, has reasonably modern features, is spritely. But I just can't get over it telling me that my resolution selection is not "appropriate" whenever I scan at high res. ?Why would anyone buy a scanner capable of 4800 dpi if they were never going above 600? In the plus column, the Epson Scan software found the all-in-one printer I bought to keep the kids out of my office and off my equipment. Which was an unexpected perk. And the unit is fast, not terribly loud, and based on the few hundred scans I've completed, the automatic descreening, color correction and dust removal are acceptable. I really just can't get over the "inappropriate" dialogue. Also not the smartest design I've ever seen: the on/off is a soft toggle, not a hard one. Worse, all the electronics seem to be packed into the front 2" of the chassis. So the power and USB connection are at the FRONT right, with the power a 90degrees set so close to the USB B connection that you have to either force a 90degrees USB connection in, or use a straight and sacrifice an additional 2" of desk space (return space, in my case, which I didn't have). I realize this is not a professional scanner, that it's designed for the soccer moms of the world. But this also isn't the first of this series for Epson. I honestly expected better, regardless of price or target market.
