Review summary for the Philips CSS2123

alaTest has collected and analyzed 517 reviews from magazines and websites. Reviewers really like the design and size. The usability and value for money are also appreciated.

    Really love this sound bar

I wanted to get rid of myold surround sound speakers. I saw this on display at our local WalMart. The sound was fantastic. When I got this home, the assembly and connection was easy. Have my TV, Blue Ray, XBox 360, and Wii hooked to it. Did not mount on wall. I am very pleased with the quality. But, then again I am an avid fan of Philips products (excellent quality, value, and support).

    wow wow

This is a great system for the money i have tried many sound bars but Philips has live up to there slogan sinse and simplicity nice looking compact, super easy set up but best of all sounds fantastic, it realy dose for the $$$ its imposible to beat. thankyou.

Not compatible with a brand new Philips 55" TV

I wanted a Philips soundbar to complement my new Philips 55PFL3907/F7 TV. I purchased both units at a warehouse club. This unit requires a PCM input and my new TV only outputs Dolby Digital S/PDIT, which product support informs me is incompatible. Instructions and specifications are poorly written and lack key details. It comes without any cables except the A/C plug. But it has awesome sound when I connect a music player through the MusicLink or connect a DVD player to the AUX Input. Who would have thought two new 2012 Philips products wouldn't work together. Not me. I used to work for Philips. Since I can't return it to where I purchased it, for me, this was a waste of money.

    Great Sound, Great Value

This is a very good sounding soundbar for the money! Works well in small to mid-sizedroom.

No code to put the control in a universal remote and the controller is to small. Gets lost easily

controller too small, no code for universal remotes. Hard to find controller sometimes

Unbelievable! Fill a small to medium room with sound!

After going thru a number of different soundbars I was pleasantly surprised that the most inexpensive one sound great. And unlike many other soundbars this little unit runs thru an optical. An added plus was that I was able to get a Logitech Harmony 600 universal remote to control the unit along with my other components. Btw,no other remote seems to work.

No code to put the control in a universal remote and the controller is to small. Gets lost easily

Remote is slow to respond. Small gets lost easily. No code to program universal remote for inclusion into.

Excellent sound at a low price.

Excellent sound for a very low price. Surprised at the quality of sound for a small size. Easy to set up. Remote is very small, hard to read but easy to use.

    just great

The soundbar is just the right size for my 27 inch tv,it is very easy to use.

    Excellent product missing one feature

This sound bar is an excellent product, and a superb value, comparable to higher priced systems. However, the one issue I had with it was that there was no visual display. Even the "off-on" and "surround" lights are on the top which are not visible from normal watching position. If not being able to see the volume, bass, and treble levels on the screen doesn't matter to you, I would recommend this product in a heartbeat.

I am using this in a small room. A bargain at the price I paid and perfect for a bedroom or similar sized room.

    Great sound and price

Just bought this sounds bar at Walmart, and very happy with it. It has great sound and was a good price. I live in apartment and was looking for a sound bar that has a surround sound effect and didn't want to spend a lot. This sound bar is perfect, props to you Philips, and thank you!!!!

    Great value

This is a tremendous value. I found the sound very good. Easy setup. My only complaint was that there is nothing displayed on the screen so you don't know what the sound level is, nor any other displayable items. Even the power light is on top of the unit where it is not easily seen. But for the sound for the price, I would think it would be hard to beat.

    Great Value for the money

Price and quaility ease of use, it sounds as good as a 500.00 dollar unit

    very good tone

the size and quality are excellet for the money. Ease of installation is a plus.

Works great with my Philips TV

Easy to set up and looks great. Sounds real good for for what I paid. I then turned on my Philips TVs surround sound and with both of them combined sounds as good as any surround system I had ever heard.

without ability to add to universal remote, it is not worth the trouble

It does not matter what this glorified speaker sounds like, it requires picking up a diffeerent remote to change the volume or source. Who needs another tiny remote that will eventually get lost. Will return unit.

    Let down

Got this as a gift and opened it right up. Easy to hook up and set up. We made it through half a movie with awesome sound, and then it started getting a squeak (almost like it was blown). Perhaps I had been gifted a used/returned unit. I will take it back and exchange to see if this problem continues. Remote is tiny and you can not see where your volume levels are, there is not display. The only time you know your levels is when you are at the min/max and the lights flash all at once. When it worked it sounded great in our little room with our 27" TV.

for the 30 mins it was working it sounded great!

found this at a good price for a bedroom soundbar-but maybe you get what you pay for--finally got the correct cords and the sound was wonderful and dialog was easier to understand! but after about half hr. we tried to mute it for a phone call and remote wouldn't work! put in new battery (after a run to hardware store) and still didn't work-used FAQ's for possible solution and check for infrared signal-none. called support-after much discussion re our address (we only have a POBOX since we don't get delivery in our small town) they will send us a new one--in 10-15 days. so guess we don't know how this works and won't for another 2 wks. unplugged unit to get vol. down and now can't turn back on without remote--which doesn't work, no controls on unit-only on remote?!?

    Works Great!

I went to WalMart and needed a sound bar for my TV, and purchased a different product. I hooked it up, and it buzzed and buzzed. I was convinced that it was defective and there has to be something a lot better than what I purchased. I saw this product and decided to give it a try. I LOVE it! It works beautifully with the TV and was simple to install. I highly recommend this product to anyone needing a sound bar for their listening pleasure.

    Everything Sounds So Much Better

They say that good audio enhances picture, and this sound bar has definitely elevated my home theater. We are hearing things that we never heard before. It has made movie watching at home fantastic. Plus, the sound doesn't have to be turned up as loud to hear things clearly. So glad I bought this. My only complaint is the stereo cable connectivity. This sound bar is paired with a Philips TV. If the sound bar had HDMI connectivity, then I could control both TV and sound bar with one remote. Small complaint.

    Good for the price

The remote control should be able to synch with DISH remote. Control of sound is better than TV but would like better control. Seems to work well and has few glitches.

    Sound of Excellence

I have looked at several SoundBars by many manufacturers, some much more expensive, some less. I wanted this for my bedroom to use with my new 32" flat panel TV. I put a jazz Blu-Ray DVD. I was so impressed with the Phillips SoundBar that I called some friends who came over and agreed that the sound was really amazing!! The bass, treble and midrange are perfectly in tune with my listening ear, and being a professional musician, it is important for me to hear those tones. There is no doubt that the Phillips SoundBar is an awesome piece of sound gear for a more than reasonable price!

    Great bang for the buck.

A nice sound bar for the price. Works great as an upgrade to your TV speakers. Great for a bedroom. Sound quality is good but won't replace a home theater system. Overall a good product. I will never use my TV speakers again.

    This product is good

    useless without the remote!!!

I bought the bar because i wanted a little more out of my HDTV, so i bought the bar. The sound was amazing, but it all lasted less than a week because the remote got lost due to its tiny size and because I have children in my house everyday, so now i cant use the bar at all due to its lack of buttons! I know loosing the remote is my found, but I have lucked everywhere for a universal or original that works and I haven't have luck at all, now I have a box under my TV that doesn't do anything at all, it seems like a waste of money Trust me, i know this is a very common problem due to the size of the remote, it was half the size of an iphone

    Good bang for the buck

The only drawback is with the remote. You have no way of knowing what the volume level is. Nothing appears on the TV screen.

    Great sound for the money

We first saw this model as a demo unit in a Club store. We were listening to another brand selling for around $300, then hit the start demo button on this one and we were immediately impressed by the fullness and richness of the sound. It sounded far better than the unit selling for 3 times the cost. It was simple to set up and is easy to use. We like the extra audio input and frequently use it with our iPads for music.

As always Philips Audio does not fail to impress. New products always outperforming older ones, I think that this system sounds way better than my former 1,000 watts Philips Home Theater system. Keep up the great sound quality that defines you.

    Great little sound system

This little bar works great for my bed room, nothing too fancy though. Enough hook ups in the back to hook up all my little things into it, the remote is sometimes a pain, you really have to point it right at it for it to work properly, but overall, good investment.

I was on the hunt for a compact yet great sounding system for my 32” hdtv. I didn't want the traditional 5.1/7.1 HT in box as they take up space and cramp my room with wires & nails! I considered so many sound bars from lots of big brands; they were all too pricey and only fit for 42" TVs. My search ended with the Philips CSS2123B Nothing prepared me for what I was about to listen! I was simply blown away by the sound coming from such a small unit. I'm by no means an audiophile, but I guess I can differentiate between different nuances. Here are a couple of key points as to why you can give this a try: Design: Remote: The remote is small, cute designed for practicality. There is a power button, volume button, bass & treble which allow you to custom low range, mid range & high range to your taste. In the front you have the aux, optical & coaxial to be selected depending on which source you want. Then there is the ‘surround' button, iLink for ipod/ipad, aux and mute. The only downside is that there R chances of losing it due its small size.(to counter this I got universal remote! Main unit: Just 28" wide, this is the smallest sound bar I've seen. Low-rise profile and fits perfectly under my TV, there r also wall mounting options if u like. All connectivity is found in main unit (unlike some brands which keep them on the subwoofer) really convenient here Now I know what they mean by 'sense and simplicity':) As the sub if placed near the TV or receiver can cause interference. Subwoofer: Nice and compact, with 6' drivers. Connectivity: Have the following connections...digital coaxial in, Digital optical in, Subwoofer out, AUX in iPod/iPhone: via 3.5mm Audio In Side connections: Audio In (3.5mm) One highlight here is that I've checked other sound bars and most of them did not have coaxial in, I've hooked up my DVD player with coaxial output and the sound is just as good as optical out! Philips knows what they are doing & stand apart from the crowd. Performance: Now for the most important part, this unit has a beautiful blend of highs, mids & lows I'm hearing nuance is most songs that I've never heard before! For example the song "Here we go again" by James Blunt (the lows are heard just as the original source!) When I listen to heavy metal/rock/techno I turn on double bass, and also increase the lows & mids as they are user-selectable, amazing punch! Movies sound great, excellent clarity even when volume turned down. If you want you can turn on virtual/simulated surround mode, but I don't use it. Verdict: Philips always have the edge when in comes to Audio/Video..

    Great Sound!

Love the depth of sound but the set-up directions need improvement.

Great Sound Bar and Woofer for the price

Philips CSS2123B is a great affordable home sound bar system. Compact design and good sound at a low cost. Only concerns is that the only way to operate the system is with the small remote included with the unit. Do not lose or break this remote as you will not be able to control the unit. There are no buttons on the unit/woofer to adjust or turn on of off. Another bad feature is that there is no visual display for BASS, Treble, or volume. The only way is to listen to hear the difference.

    Too many annoying aspects

Decent sound for the price, but way too many annoying aspects to for me to recommend. See cons below.
