With the introduction of the Epson Stylus Pro 3880, the bar has once again been raised and the realm of what's possible expanded. Engineered for the most discriminating professionals, it comes with a variety of technological breakthroughs that will make it the benchmark by which all other 17-inch printers are measured. In fact, there's so much innovation in this feature-rich printer, you might expect a much larger footprint, but the Epson Stylus Pro 3880 is remarkably compact, equal in size to many 13-inch printers.

With the Epson Stylus Pro 3880, uncompromising quality is within reach. Engineered for the discriminating professional, this compact, 17" wide printer includes Epson UltraChrome® K3 with Vivid Magenta Ink Technology, world-renowned for professional printing applications. This, combined with an advanced MicroPiezo AMC™ print head, enables the Pro 3880 to produce gallery-quality color and black-and-white output up to 17" x 22". The printer's industry-acclaimed ink set delivers a phenomenal color gamut with breathtaking blues and violets. All-new AccuPhoto™ HD2 technology provides smoother color transitions and better highlight and shadow detail for prints with a true photographic look. Exceptional print quality and professional media support - the Epson Stylus Pro 3880 makes it all possible.

Epson UltraChrome K3 with Vivid Magenta Ink Technology is a professional, 8-color ink set with advanced magenta pigments that provide more dramatic blues and violets for an impressive color gamut. Its three-level black technology delivers richer blacks, outstanding tonal range and an unprecedented gray balance, all of which ensure outstanding black-and-white prints. Built on Epson's heritage of professional ink technology, this pigment ink set offers instant color stability. Colors stay consistent, whether viewed right out of the printer or decades later. With Epson UltraChrome K3 with Vivid Magenta, you get print quality and longevity that satisfies the most demanding professional.

The Epson Stylus Pro 3880 optimizes your working space. This compact, professional-level printer generates exhibition quality prints, worthy of gallery display, up to 17" x 22" - an innovation made possible by Epson's expertise in microminiaturization and professional printing technology.

AccuPhoto HD2 technology was created from a collaboration between Epson and the Rochester Institute of Technology's Munsell Color Science Laboratory and combines a complex mathematical architecture and advanced screening technology to provide outstanding image quality. AccuPhoto HD2 is specifically engineered to ensure precision placement of each individual ink droplet, resulting in smooth, grain-free images. Choosing from an extraordinary number of possible ink combinations for each color, this technology optimizes ink usage to maximize the color gamut and provide smooth color transitions and gradations. Reduction of the metameric index makes it possible to achieve consistent color under different lighting conditions. And, it ensures truly photographic prints, even in high-speed or lower resolution print modes.

Our advanced MicroPiezo print head with AMC (Advanced Meniscus Control) is at the core of Epson's advanced ink jet technology, enabling the Epson Stylus Pro 3880 to deliver incredible detail. This permanent, high-performance print head creates variable-sized droplets as small as 3.5 picoliters and places them with remarkable accuracy and precision. This professional print head also incorporates an ink-repelling coating which decreases maintenance and increases reliability.

Part of an advanced workflow, the Advanced Black-and-White Photo Mode is your key to intuitive and consistent control, for stunning neutral or toned black-and-white prints. Choose from one of four present menus - neutral, warm, cool or sepia. Or, fine tune your image further with custom slider bars and the color tone wheel that gives you precise control.

The Epson Stylus Pro 3880 was designed without compromise so your visions could be printed without compromise. With its compact size, it represents the next step in professional desktop printing, and is a must have for the serious professional.

I knew this was a good printer before I purchased it, I didn't just how good it was until I made a dozen prints. Of those twelve prints, ten were BW, mainly on Velvet Fine Art paper (8x10's) and two on Luster. I also printed a couple color images and was just blown away by the detail and gradation of the tones in the BWs as well as the color tonality. The printer came very well packaged. Many many small pieces of tape held everything together. A good paper manual and the quick start guide made for an easy installation. The driver software loaded without any problems as did the paper ICC profiles. Everything worked right out of the box. Prior to making a print I performed a monitor calibration. Aside from some minor differences in dark tones, the printed image did a great job matching the screen image. One minor annoyance, the rear manual paper feed is a bit finicky when it comes to loading paper, sometimes taking two or three times before it is fed correctly. Not enough of a problem to decrease my star rating. Maybe things may change with time, but my experience right out of the box is nothing but positive and I would highly recommend this printer. The price is high, but keep in mind that you get fully charged 80mL cartridges with the printer. This is arguably the best printer currently on the market. Can't wait to print some 17x22s.

This is an excellent printer when it prints. Unfortunately, even after reinstalling the latest printer driver on my Mac pro tower running PS 5.5 under Snow Leopard, it keeps hanging up. I had the 3800 before this, and loved it. As I said, when it is working, it produces beautiful rich prints. I wish the printer driver worked better. I often need to produce proofs under tight deadlines, and it is a pain when the printer refuses to print.

Works well with Fine Art papers

By phylewen

from Massachusetts

Comments about Epson Stylus Pro 3880 Large Format Printer:

I had been using an Epson 1400 for several years and had been looking to upgrade for better color and archival inks. I am an artist and am not printing photographs but images that I create on my computer in Photoshop CS6. The Stylus Pro 3880 takes some getting used to. I've been testing of papers and profiles to get what I want. It is sensitive to the loading of paper, so I'm learning to be very careful, precise and gentle. So far, I'm very pleased with the results and am happy to have this printer. It is also encouraging me to work larger, which is great.

Great quality. Poor feeding with canvas

By dket

from Ramsey, MN

Comments about Epson Stylus Pro 3880 Large Format Printer:

I purchased the R3880 because I had such good results on the R1900. So far the printing on the R3880 has been exceptional. I wanted to print larger size canvas. Big problems with the feeding in the rear with 17 x 22 exhibition canvas matte. I spent hours trying to get the paper to feed without a paper error and did not succeed. When talking with support, I did not get any good info except that the printer is not really made to print on that canvas. They pretty much said good luck. The techs tip did finally work and it had nothing to do with the adjustments. I had to put my hands flat against the guide and push really hard and not let up. Totally differently than the video that is show on how to load canvas paper. The print was fantastic in black and white. 5 stars for quality but one star for feeding canvas in the rear.

Great photos

Comments about Epson Stylus Pro 3880 Large Format Printer:

I have only used it one night, but so far it is a great printer. However, it does not come with the unusual USB/printer cable. For the price it seems that they would include the simple cable.

3880 Printer

By Loo

from Undisclosed

Comments about Epson Stylus Pro 3880 Large Format Printer:

Packaging was outstanding. Arrived in about half the time I expected. Great instructions for set up/install. (I use a Mac) Printed terrific photos immediately. Colors are great. No issues. I have to say I had a bit of buyer's remorse given the price but that mostly went away after I printed my first photo. Absolutely love it!

I Miss my Epson Pro 4000

By Bella

from Camarillo, CA

Comments about Epson Stylus Pro 3880 Large Format Printer:

I bought the 3880 to replace my Epson Pro 4000 which died due to a permanently clogged magenta ink nozzle. The 3880 color print quality is the same as the 4000 but it is better printing black and white. I'm hoping that the inks will not clog.

Wide Format Printing Comes of Age

By Richard

from Roanoke, VA

Comments about Epson Stylus Pro 3880 Large Format Printer:

Having used a R2400 printer for 6 years still didn't prepare me for the results of the 3880. Amazing clarity, depth and realism in an affordable wide format printer. All of the thousands of digital images captured on a hard drive aren't real until you print them on 13x19 or 17x22 exhibition paper to share with others. Restores your faith that giving up a darkroom is not a step backwards. Once I get the image perfect on a print, I can create more copies exactly the same. Hard to do in a darkroom. The 80ml tanks are more economical than the smaller ones found with smaller printers. My only recommendation is for Epson to create their next generation printer with mat and glossy blacks without throwing away ink to clear the lines when switching from glossy to mat prints. Looking forward to many years and many cases of paper creating prints that show the art of photography. RC

Highly recommend the SP3880

By Dave

from Rochester, MN

Comments about Epson Stylus Pro 3880 Large Format Printer:

I'm a long-time Epson printer fellow, having owned a 1280 and, most recently, a R2400. They were great printers, yielding prints I've been selling in a local gallery. But the SP3880 is in a completely different class. I've made only a single 17 x 22-inch print, on Exhibition Fiber paper, and I'm sold on this printer. Delighted with the results. The jury is still out on ink costs, but I know the larger cartridges will be more convenient. I give this machine a solid thumbs up and look forward to getting better acquainted with its capabilities.
