Well, the pair of Sony MDR-ED228 headphones I had has finally broke. After 12 YEARS. They have a very comfortable to wear, even for the entire day, the coord is just long enough to be in the lower pocket of BDUs, but keep out of the way if the audio device is in a higher pocket. The cord is very durable. over 10 years and it's still not breaking up, amazing. The only real difference between these newer ones and mine is the heads have become more articulated, but the connector has become less durable looking. Mine has a 90 degree elbow connection, but it doesn't move at all. I have a new Sony SRS-U10 speaker system, but the elbow connection on that is very flexible; something that might not bode well for down the road. The sound that comes out of these are really good for what they are. The mids and highs are clear, but it has barely a hint less bass than Sony High Performance, but they are much louder. Only after 10 years did the left bud develop a barely perceptible buzz with high bass and massive amounts of volume. These are the most comfortable headphones I've used. I have newer pairs, but I still use these. I can hardly feel them.

I have an old mdr ed228 set of this style. They are uncomfortable when in the best position to hear with them. The only comfortable position gives very poor listening ability. I would like a pair of ear buds to use with them, but can't find any information on the web for a brand/type that will work with this style.

Shame they don't make these anymore...

By chrisbu

Comments about Sony EAR BUD HEADPHONES - 16MM:

These earphones were great, because they fitted fairly flush to the ear, you could use them at night with your ear to the pillow. The replacements, MDR-ED12LP have a very large sitcking-out back, and can't be used with your head on one site. Unfortunately, they only lasted about a year (when used while I sleep), and my last one has just died, so I wish I'd bought a stock of them.

Comments about Sony EAR BUD HEADPHONES - 16MM:

Years ago I bought some Sony Headphones and really loved their clean sound... sadly one of the cords broke. Currently, own two higher end headphones. AKG 240 Studio Monitor over the ear headphones and Audio Technia ATH-EW9 Adjustable Wooden Clip-on Headphones. Both have great reputations, great specs and sound great... to me.

the only reason i wouldn't recommend this is because the design. after a few minutes wearing them my ears were killing me. you may not have these problems but i sure did. overall a pretty good headphone

Comments about Sony EAR BUD HEADPHONES - 16MM:

These buds are the best $20 buds i have ever used. They don't get hissy, or distorted at high volumes. The bass is nice and rich, all highs are crisp. they fit in my ear (yours may be different) very nicely, i will dirt bike with these they fit so well. all in all, even though i have not used them for more than 24 hours, i recommend them. plus, you can never go wrong with sony.
