My main purpose for this scanner was to archive family photos that have been stored in various boxes since the 30's. It's a wonder that they have survived this long and need to be digitally archived before they are gone forever. What's great about this scanner is that I can load up as many photos as I can fit on the scanner glass and it automatically differentiates between each one, numbers them, allows you to auto rotate before scanning and auto-numbers the filename outputs. Then it systematically scans through each photo as if they were put on the glass at different times. This is a HUGE time saver. The speed of the scanner is faster than other/older scanners I have owned - but as with all scanners - the speed of the scan is proportional to the resolution of the scan. The higher the resolution - the slower the scan. The scanner has several extra scan modes other than just automatic and numerous settings in each mode which I am still experimenting with. It also has four customizable buttons on the front to instantly scan, copy, scan-to-email and create PDFs. And, with the included Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software, I have been able to easily convert scanned documents into editable text. I have used the negative and slide holders and found that they are relatively easy to use. The slide holder works fine but the negative holder does not clip together as tightly as I would like when scanning negatives. Older negatives tend to curl a bit and I think the holders would work a little better if they had register pins which would help hold the width of the negative and thus flatten it when the holder is snapped together. Otherwise, the scanner does a great job of scanning multiple negatives and allowing you to make numerous different adjustments to each one before scanning so that you can obtain that perfect scan.

I bought this scanner to digitize a set of b/w glass negatives of the beginning of the XXc. The scanner itself seems quite fine--I have no real reference, but any pixel peeping I have done did not find anything wrong in the results. Scan time is rather on the long side, but bearable (a couple of minutes for half a 9cm x 12cm glass negative at 1200dpi--I need to do it in two rounds and use Photoshop to stick them together, as the whole negative exceeds the backlit size, but this goes perfectly fine). What I found pretty disappointing is the software. Notice that I am using the EPSON Scan application to produce 16-bit TIFFs and do all processing manually in Photoshop (that is, I do not use any of the fancy options to "improve" the image). Here are a few annoying things: (1) I scan repeatedly in the same area (backlit, cannot use the provided placement guides due to the size of the originals) and EVERY TIME I do a preview (more later on why I need a preview every time) I need in fact to do two, one of the complete backlit area and one of the (unchanged) zoom. Why it does not honour my preselected area from one preview to the next one is obscure to me. (2) The preview does not indicate burned or black areas, as any decent software does (CameraRAW is perfect for that). (3) The levels/histogram control has the usual little triangles to control... one would guess the white and the black points. In fact, no, they control light and shadows, with one extremely annoying consequence: you cannot just place them at the edge of the histogram and therefore hope to capture the whole range used by the photo; you have to place them "somewhere" and judge visually if you are clipping either edge of the spectrum (see point 2). Just to give the reader an idea of the weirdness of this, the default/reset position of the cursors is not 0 and 100%/255 but something like 50 and 225 (I cannot remember the exact numbers now as the scanner is not connected, but you see the point) and this is probably supposed to be the setting which gives a linear (?) rendering of the whole scanner range (they call it "reset"...). (4) The automatic exposure is just plain bad: probably to please the crowds it has high contrast (nothing too wrong here) and clips white and blacks badly. Not even close to be usable--hence I need to do two previews (see point 1) and judge visually the best placement of the edges of the levels (and it is tough, see points 2 and 3). In summary, I am happy of my purchase because I manage to do what I bought it for and with the quality I desire. Yet, achieving what I want is rather painful and certainly takes much more time and effort than it should if the user interface had been slightly more competently written.

Copy editing

Comments about Epson Perfection V600:

As with any product purchased for a singular purpose, you want it to satisfy your needs, both ergonomically and functionally. This unit is lacking in location of on/off switch and clear precise cropping lines to satisfy my needs. Others may find this of little bother. I like to quickly crop within documents to extract only what I need. You have to go through too many steps to achieve this. Other than these small concerns, the Epson is useful and I would, grrrr, recommend it to others (after they upgrade functions).

Great scanner

By John

from Queen Valley, AZ

Comments about Epson Perfection V600:

This machine is just perfect. I had the scanner up and running in just a few minutes. Everything is very intuitive, you almost don't need a manual, although it is good to have for some of the finer details. Some reviews I read before buying the scanner said that they had trouble setting it up, but I am 75 and had no trouble so maybe these people have some other problem with Epson. If there was a software problem everybody would have the same problem. They may have been trying to install it on a computer with too little disk space or too little RAMM. When you download the software it automatically checks for the latest driver, but Just in case, I went to Epson's web site, found the scanner and it recommended a special Download for Microsoft. I downloaded that too. You can do just about everything in "Home Mode". If you need finer adjustments, "Professional Mode" takes care of them quite easily. I like the fact that you can scan multiple prints at the same time and they come out as individual scans, just leave about a quarter inch between them. Slides and negs. are just as easy. The only negative is the film/slide holder is very flimsy and I doubt it will hold up over prolonged use, but I guess replacements are available. Digital Ice works fine on color, almost no degradation in sharpness...too bad it dosen't work in B&W. The copy mode is great. Just have your printer tuned on, press "copy" button on front of machine, get preview, check what type of copy you want, press scan and and your printer will print out a perfect copy...almost easier than a dedicated copy machine. I have an Epson printer so maybe that's why it was so flawless, but it should work on other printers just as well. The only reason that I didn't give it 5 stars is the OCR program. The ABBYY FineReader 9.0 Sprint is straight out of the 90,s. It is a very limited program with almost no formatting tools In 1 mode they want you so sign up for a subscription to do that function and they strongly suggest you upgrade to their professional mode for almost 3/4 the price of the scanner itself. The best thing to do is to scan and convert the text into Microsoft Word, copy and past it into a page layout program or OpenOffice and format it there. But watch out, it shows it is scanning, but watch the scan button, if it changes press save or else it will keep scanning multiple copies. Epson should find a different OCR program so they don't ruin a good reputation for a Great scanner.

Starting Scanner

Comments about Epson Perfection V600:

I installed the software disc, and set up the scanner. However, when pushing any of the buttons to start the scan, or clicking on the Epson Icon, it quits without doing anything! Not a great start! Help? (I've looked at the guide, but have not found a solution to try.)

Comments about Epson Perfection V600:

I have just started using my scanner. Set up was easy and the software it came with is awesome! Some of the slides I have scanned have actually been over corrected. Meaning the software did to much color enhancing. It can be fixed and I think it is an issue of becoming more familiar with all the bells and whistles of the scanner. But for the most part I am very happy. I have only done a small number but I am already more happy with this scanner than the last one I had, which quit working mid way through.

Comments about Epson Perfection V600:

I scanned a family photo from 1936 which had some scratches on it. Couldn't believe the difference after scanning using the restore color and Digital ICE feature! Other than that I have not tried any other features, but was very impressed with how easy it was to get a great reproduction of this family treasure!!

Everything I was looking for

By pnutj58

from Vancouver, WA

Comments about Epson Perfection V600:

I needed a scanner that could scan negatives of all sizes. While this one does not have a specific slot for size 110 film from back in the '70s, it is extremely easy to fit it into one of the other forms. It also scans "positives" which is helpful. Fixing color, etc. is easy and can be done automatically or manually. I simply can't say enough good things about this product. I bought two of them for my business. The only thing I can't comment on, at this time, is longevity, because I've only had it a short time. But, I have an older Epson scanner that is still working great and it's about 8 years old.

Slide Conversion

By Tech Guy

Comments about Epson Perfection V600:

I used the Epson V600 Photo to scan old family slides, dating back to the 1960s. In scanning over 850 slides to JPG I had no problems. It was great being able to scan four slides at a time. I highly recommend.

Epson Perfection V600 Photo Scanner

Comments about Epson Perfection V600:

Got a great deal, got it fast, got it hooked up and working quick. Only 2 problems- 1 - OCR software interface with MS Office Suite 2013, resolved easily with removal of OCR software. Now no OCR scan available, but I don't usually use that and can use in on another computer with earlier version of MS Office Suite. 2 - Manual did not clearly list my "multiple photo scan" issue, but help line directed me to info in manual. Just couldn't find it easily. Works great, thank you for another excellent Epson product!
