My main purpose for this scanner was to archive family photos that have been stored in various boxes since the 30's. It's a wonder that they have survived this long and need to be digitally archived before they are gone forever. What's great about this scanner is that I can load up as many photos as I can fit on the scanner glass and it automatically differentiates between each one, numbers them, allows you to auto rotate before scanning and auto-numbers the filename outputs. Then it systematically scans through each photo as if they were put on the glass at different times. This is a HUGE time saver. The speed of the scanner is faster than other/older scanners I have owned - but as with all scanners - the speed of the scan is proportional to the resolution of the scan. The higher the resolution - the slower the scan. The scanner has several extra scan modes other than just automatic and numerous settings in each mode which I am still experimenting with. It also has four customizable buttons on the front to instantly scan, copy, scan-to-email and create PDFs. And, with the included Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software, I have been able to easily convert scanned documents into editable text. I have used the negative and slide holders and found that they are relatively easy to use. The slide holder works fine but the negative holder does not clip together as tightly as I would like when scanning negatives. Older negatives tend to curl a bit and I think the holders would work a little better if they had register pins which would help hold the width of the negative and thus flatten it when the holder is snapped together. Otherwise, the scanner does a great job of scanning multiple negatives and allowing you to make numerous different adjustments to each one before scanning so that you can obtain that perfect scan.

I bought this scanner to digitize a set of b/w glass negatives of the beginning of the XXc. The scanner itself seems quite fine--I have no real reference, but any pixel peeping I have done did not find anything wrong in the results. Scan time is rather on the long side, but bearable (a couple of minutes for half a 9cm x 12cm glass negative at 1200dpi--I need to do it in two rounds and use Photoshop to stick them together, as the whole negative exceeds the backlit size, but this goes perfectly fine). What I found pretty disappointing is the software. Notice that I am using the EPSON Scan application to produce 16-bit TIFFs and do all processing manually in Photoshop (that is, I do not use any of the fancy options to "improve" the image). Here are a few annoying things: (1) I scan repeatedly in the same area (backlit, cannot use the provided placement guides due to the size of the originals) and EVERY TIME I do a preview (more later on why I need a preview every time) I need in fact to do two, one of the complete backlit area and one of the (unchanged) zoom. Why it does not honour my preselected area from one preview to the next one is obscure to me. (2) The preview does not indicate burned or black areas, as any decent software does (CameraRAW is perfect for that). (3) The levels/histogram control has the usual little triangles to control... one would guess the white and the black points. In fact, no, they control light and shadows, with one extremely annoying consequence: you cannot just place them at the edge of the histogram and therefore hope to capture the whole range used by the photo; you have to place them "somewhere" and judge visually if you are clipping either edge of the spectrum (see point 2). Just to give the reader an idea of the weirdness of this, the default/reset position of the cursors is not 0 and 100%/255 but something like 50 and 225 (I cannot remember the exact numbers now as the scanner is not connected, but you see the point) and this is probably supposed to be the setting which gives a linear (?) rendering of the whole scanner range (they call it "reset"...). (4) The automatic exposure is just plain bad: probably to please the crowds it has high contrast (nothing too wrong here) and clips white and blacks badly. Not even close to be usable--hence I need to do two previews (see point 1) and judge visually the best placement of the edges of the levels (and it is tough, see points 2 and 3). In summary, I am happy of my purchase because I manage to do what I bought it for and with the quality I desire. Yet, achieving what I want is rather painful and certainly takes much more time and effort than it should if the user interface had been slightly more competently written.

All Negatives Very Blurry with Horrible Contrast

By Unhappy

from USA, Mobile, AL, USA

Comments about Epson Perfection V600:

It is not the source- my negatives are perfectly clean, crisp and colored. The film is flat. It is not damaged in any way. When viewed with a backlight, the negatives are fantastic. It is not my computer. My screen produces HD images from all types of sources available online. The colors are true. It is not the software- I've tried almost every combination of choices using the professional scan software option to capture an image. ALL are blurry and incapable of distinguishing well defined areas of the photo where there happens to be a high contrast. The imperfections are NOT remedied with post-scan processing software. The software masks them slightly. The scanner simply cannot find the correct focal point for the image. It's just like a camera lens. Have you ever tried to photograph a flower up close and not adjusted the macro settings? The camera cannot produce the image without blurring- it cannot focus because it is too close. The same issue appears to be occurring with this scanner, but unfortunately, I do not have a macro setting to adjust. I surmise the backlight is too dim as well. I cannot confirm because it shuts down when the scanner lid is slightly opened. Only buy his scanner if you want quick images to post on facebook. This is not for a person attempting to capture their negatives digitally in a quality manner for databasing of your family moments. It will give you an image. It will not look like the picture you captured on film.

FOR NEW HARDWARE, GOOD

By fofi

from Redondo Becach, CA

Comments about Epson Perfection V600:

like other hardware items i have purchased, there is always a learning curve. i take it all scanners are some what slow, but i should figure out the most efficient ways to operate the scanner. Good scanner, maybe great as I get to know it with use. The investment is worthwhile. i have thousands and thousands of photo, slides and negatives. Do I have the time to actually capture them to a digital format? Epson has given me the tool to start and find out.

Epson Perfection V-600 photo

By Rudi

from IL

Comments about Epson Perfection V600:

To early to review this scanner. Just purchased couple week's ago. I like the quality of the scan's. I hope it last longer than the last two Epson scanners. I'm disappointed that the scanners don't last long. I own Epson perfection 3170 and V-500 photo scanners. Neither one is working now. Thanks to Epson for giving me price break on this scanner which makes me feel better. I hope Epson improves registration window form / buttons and make them more visible, so that I do not stumble several times to go back and try to register the product.

So far I have been able ...

By doramar

from Memphis TN

Comments about Epson Perfection V600:

So far I have been able to scan 1950's black & white negatves and it's done a great job of doing that at a speedy pace. I have not scannned anything else yet. I like that you can put 4 at a time and it singles them out for you. The negatives that I have scanned have been reverted to a positive image in Picasa.

Very Good Scanner

By David

from Maryland

Comments about Epson Perfection V600:

I have only been using the V600 for a few days, but have already managed almost 1,000 scans of old negatives. I tried this years ago and gave up because my 300 DPI scanners did not offer the resolution I needed for scanning slides and 35mm negatives. It looks like I might finish the job this time. I have found a few things by trial and error. For instance, crop before scanning, not after. I had to rescan numerous overexposed negatives after I learned that trick. I also found that a piece of cardboard cut to reach from the side of the scanner plate to the transparency window allows me to align a negative directly on the plate without having to fight with the transparency frames. They are fine for 35mm film strips, but not so user friendly with individual 120 negatives. Scanning is slow, but that is to be expected when scanning at 3200 or 6400 DPI. It is impressive to see a 100 MB file produced from a 35mm negative. I find it worth the time, since most of the negatives I am dealing with are from WWII and I want to save all the detail I can.

Great Friend

By Simon

from Austin, TX, USA

Comments about Epson Perfection V600:

I am an old avid photographer since the 1950's, I also inherited my Professional Photographer Dad's prints, B&W color positives, negatives and slides to add to mine. This scanner has help me revive the past in ways I can not adequately describe. It is a little slow like me, but provides accurate high quality results for all needs.
