The clock works as advertised. I was interested in the clock as it was the first alarm clock that I had come across that diverted from the usual/old lcd/led digit display technology. I had leaned toward the "Kensington Rise&Shine" app for iphone/ipodtouch, but figured a product designed specifically as an alarm clock would be the way to go. Anyway - the clock is great during the daytime the background photo slideshows are a nice touch (note: using the internal memory for slideshows will include the Sony demo pics -- use external media for slideshows if you only want your content to be displayed) . The "night mode" can only be entered by manually cycling through the brightness settings -- it would be very nice if Sony would provide a method for the end user to set a time schedule for the clock to enter/exit 'nightmode'. That being said when the clock is in nightmode the display is rather dark...(less room illumination than any clock I've previously used)...it would also be nice if Sony allowed the user to determine the brightness/contrast level of 'nightmode' to suit individual tastes (note: I have this clock in my bedroom and prefer to have a dark room and hence utilize nightmode, the clock keeps the room dark, but sometimes the time is a little hard to see...some folks may not have an issue with the clock being 'bright' 24 hours a day). Anyway - perhaps Sony will provide a 'USB Software Update" for this clock and rectify the small issues mentioned above. I would buy this clock again...and am looking forward to when Sony releases an OLED version of this type of clock :) .

I have several major problems with this device. 1) It does not have shuffle. Sony's CD players back in the 1990s had shuffle (I owned one!). Every iPod since what, 2005 or earlier, has shuffle. But this device does not. It cannot randomly play songs from your USB or SD storage medium (or presumably, from onboard memory). 2) Lack of a shuffle function causes varying degrees of boredom with regard to music selections. For example, playing from a USB or SD device yields your files in filesystem order - not horrible, but monotonous. On the other hand, when selecting one of these devices for music to use for your alarm, you have to pick a SINGLE FILE... so you wake up to the same song every morning. Not really what I would hope for. 3) The interface is too complex and insufficiently explained. While you can turn off the built-in images (others here have complained you can't), it is, for example, fairly confusing as how you start a photo slide show from a USB or SD device. It can be done, it's just... more difficult than it needed to be. 4) Finally, the built-in memory is mostly useless. To use it one must select files on other memory devices (like USB or SD, etc) one at a time. But these days people have hundreds if not thousands of mp3s and photos... so not MINIMALLY having a "select all" feature for copying is ridiculous. I for one will not take the time to select each one of my 450 favorite mp3s for transfer to the device; I doubt many others will either. [Conclusion] It is my fondest hope that, since this is a software device (i.e. updateable firmware), Sony will either correct some of these problems, or will release their firmware specs to the OSS community, who surely could improve the device considerably. But I am not interested in waiting for a device that works great, I would like one now... so I will be returning this product to the store. Better luck next time, Sony.

Comments about Sony ICF-CL75iP Digital Frame for iPod:

I've had this product for about 3 weeks. Downloaded latest firmware 1.05. Reliable so far, never missed an alarm. Very nice digital picture frame. Clock works well. Love that it has battery backup in case of power failure. Radio and mp3 playback good. Two problems encountered so far: once at night, while it was on sleep mode, it made a little sound and turned to full brightness, without any alarm going off. It wasn't time for any alarm either. I just put it back to sleep mode and it was OK but it did wake me up. Second problem: it didn't recognize my iPod after I took it out to use it and then put it back in. I had to unplug and replug the clock radio for it to recognize it again. But overall, good product so far.

      Stay away! Great paper weight.

Comments about Sony ICF-CL75iP Digital Frame for iPod:

Stay far away from this product if you actually want to use it as a alarm clock. We have two of these units and they BOTH lock up randomly and the alarm won't sound. Brightness adjustments are horrible. The "night" mode is too dark and the one that is a little brighter is too bright. It does have a perfect brightness level BUT it only stays on for 5 seconds before going into "night" mode. SONY!!! Why make a product that doesn't work?? I have $400 worth of paperweights!!! Firmware updates don't help at all!

will freeze in the middle of the night at least once a month. It's like building a car that doesn’t start. Kind of a no brainer. Pass on this product if you have the choice.

Comments about Sony ICF-CL75iP Digital Frame for iPod:

The latest update to the firmware was June/10 at V1.05. I think it might be a bit more reliable, but still not 100%. It's locked up at least once since that upgrade.

        Probably the coolest clock radio....EVER!

        By Aretelio

        from Central PA

Comments about Sony ICF-CL75iP Digital Frame for iPod:

First off, don't let the negative reviews about crashing and default photos not being able to be deleted. The current firmware (1.05) has addressed those issues. This is a great little unit with tons of features, a great screen and is basically just completely awesome. It IS a bit on the pricey side, but hey, you can't put a price on awesomeness.

You can definitely call this the dream machine. It lets you keep on dreaming b/c it freezes and the alarm doesn't go off. This has happened so many times that i refuse to use it as an alarm clock. It is now a digital picture frame and a charger for my IPOD. Even if you download the new driver the problem still persists. Thanks Sony.

Comments about Sony ICF-CL75iP Digital Frame for iPod:

Nice looking device, as Sony is known to do. Hard to give a favorable rating when the most basic function of an alarm clock, to wake you, doesn't work reliably. The latest release of the firmware for this clock was to correct this "freezing" (1.03) but it hasn't. I'm still hoping 1.04 does the trick...

                  Worst 'alarm clock' ever....

                  By namicz2

                  Pros

                  • Nice display

                  • aggravating clock
                  • can not trust it as an alarm clock

                  Best Uses

Comments about Sony ICF-CL75iP Digital Frame for iPod:

I must admit that I created another 'sony style' account just to post a review of my displeasure of this 'alarm clock'. I posted the 2nd review of this clock (namicz - Oct 17, 2009) when this item was new and I was much more naive. I have updated the clock with the latest firmware update (1 day after released) and am still highly displeased. This clock has frozen (read alarm doesn't sound) multiple times when I needed the alarm to go off. The screen has locked up multiple times when transitioning pictures resulting in an unreadable time display. The item that got me to write this new review was the inability to turn-on/enable the alarm on --pushed 'Alarm-1' button a few times & nothing happens - had to pull the plug (rest device) to enable the alarm [2nd time this happened]. I don't have any trust in this clock as an 'alarm clock' and will remove it from my bedroom and it will henceforth be regulated as clock in the living room. I regret giving away my 'reliable' alarm clock for this 'clock that occasionally freezes' and I am definitely NOT looking forward to the day that Sony releases an OLED version of this clock (that is unless they make SUBSTANTIAL improvements in the 'usability/performs it basic feature set as expected' category). Seriously....if you are thinking about buying this clock for your bedroom as an 'alarm clock' save your money and stick with a tried & true/proven alarm clock. Hope you are able to read this review before Sony deletes it.
