Just recently purchased this unit, and am very pleased. Plugged it in, turned on the projector, was immediately notified that there was a firmware update. It works great! For those of you who are stuck on the "$80 wifi adapter", it's not needed, just plug it in, it has a network jack!

For a couple of months, the BDP-S470 functioned perfectly streaming Netflix videos. But in the last week, it gets constant interrupts, with the displayed message "Loading. Please wait...". There must have been a firmware update that corrected some issue but inadvertently broke the part of the software that handles streaming Netflix. Sony, please address this problem! (Yes, the Netflix streaming works fine on my computer.)

Some reviewers complain about the cost for a wi-fi adapter, but then they should buy the BDP-S570 which is wi-fi! I had a Blu-Ray and this one is more clearer than the older models. Load time is faster and sub menus are very easy to utilize. Only thing is that I would prefer a keyboard on entering search functions. I prefer to be wired up as I live in a very congested area, and I don't want to have problems.

We bought this DVD player to replace our much loved but temperamental 10 yr old Sony DVD player. The main selling point was the ability to connect to Netflix, YouTube, etc. Upon initial set-up we quickly found out that the unit did not pick the Internet without having an optional adapter which was our first disappointment. After several hours of going from one retailer to another we finally were able to locate the only adapter which would work (Sony manufactures this adapter guaranteeing an additional $80.00 in their pockets), on top of this we found that we could not use the adapter on our laptop-it is for use exclusively on Sony products. It's a decent DVD player but I would highly suggest stepping up to the s570 with built in wifi ability

This is a great player. Plays movies perfectly. Does a good job with Pandora and Amazon VOD. However, the netflix app is very lacking. You can only watch things in your instant queue and neither add nor search. That part is disappointing.

As u can connect an external or a portable hdd which has to be fat32. as we all know the maximum file transfer size of a fat32 is 4gb. i have movies which are as big as 15gb+. how can i transfer the movie into the hdd. it says file too big ??
will there be a support for NTFS or EXFAT ??

I upgraded from the BDP-S350 to to the BDP-S470 consolidate Blu-ray, internet streaming, and DLNA ability to one device. Sony still has a way to go to get everything working to good standards. It has the ability for internet media and it works, just not as snappy and advanced as some other options. The DLNA support works, if you have MPG files. Quite dissapointing that the US model does not support AVI or MOV. I have many home videos that I cannot watch. I guess I will just have to spend multitudes of hours converting, hoping I don't lose quality. Some options for menu customizations would be great. It seems as though everything is shown on the main menu, causing quite a bit of time to get to common locations. I also found the manuals lacking or should I say a lack of manuals. It is great to be able to look through manuals to find the hidden options and functions not normally recognized at first, but I can find no easy way to do this with the BDP-470. Overall, the device works and functions at a great price, but I would like to be able to customize the device a bit, rather than customize everything else to fit the device. I hope Sony plans to support other media types in the future as they currently do in other regions, such as Canada. Hopefully, this product will continue to expand with upgrades. The foundation is there. Sony just needs to build upon it.

This is excellent Blu-Ray DVD player. But I often very much use it for media streaming from Hard Drive, Netflix and YouTube. If it starts working, it will works for every feature it can offer. But half of the times says "Can not Load" or just hangs. Once it happens, it does not work for any feature including just playing a regular DVD or Bluray Disk.
Then you just need to restart and try and it will start working. I contacted the support couple of times, but they can not understand the problem and If restart it during the support call, it again works. So I am hoping that it will be fixed with upcoming firmware update.
